Project overview

I-WIN, with support from AfNet, implemented the Sustainable Livelihoods and Empowerment of Women Returnees through the Pass-on-the-Gift Goat Initiative in Pajok Payam, Magwi County. The project supported household resilience and women’s economic empowerment through livestock, practical training and community accountability.

It prioritized widows, survivors of gender-based violence, women with disabilities, returnees and households with limited livelihood opportunities.

Key achievements

Twenty women received livestock and training. Community oversight and solidarity groups were established, and beneficiaries signed agreements to pass offspring on to other vulnerable women.

Building a lasting livelihood

Livestock, skills and community ownership

Following consultations with local authorities, agricultural and veterinary officers, women and community leaders, 20 women were selected using agreed vulnerability criteria. Each received one male and one female goat. All 40 goats were inspected, vaccinated and dewormed before distribution.

Beneficiaries learned goat husbandry, feeding, shelter management, disease prevention, veterinary referrals, financial literacy, household planning and record keeping. A 10-member Community Livelihood Oversight Committee monitors implementation and Pass-on-the-Gift commitments, while a 20-member Women Livestock Solidarity Group supports peer learning and collective problem-solving.

Through the Pass-on-the-Gift approach, beneficiaries committed to transferring future offspring to additional vulnerable women. The first implementation phase was completed, with community members recommending expansion and continued veterinary follow-up.
