Building Inclusive Pathways to Transitional Justice in Bor County

Empowering persons with disabilities to participate in peace, justice and reconciliation

Bor County, Jonglei State
December 2023 – April 2024
UN Peacebuilding Fund through UNDP and UNMISS

Project overview

I-WIN implemented this five-month initiative to strengthen the meaningful participation of persons with disabilities in South Sudan’s transitional justice processes. The work raised awareness of the Commission for Truth-Telling, Reconciliation and Healing (CTRH), advanced disability inclusion and strengthened human rights awareness in Bor County.

Community groups, skills training and public outreach helped create more inclusive ways for people to take part in peacebuilding, truth-telling and reconciliation.

What changed

Five disability groups were established or strengthened. Their members built leadership and advocacy skills, while community outreach, drama and radio opened wider conversations about rights, justice and peaceful coexistence.

From the field

Creating space for every voice

I-WIN supported disability groups in Makuach, Kondai IDP Camp, Hai Referendum, Sug Zero and Panjak. Members received training in leadership, advocacy, public speaking, human rights and transitional justice, helping them advocate for inclusion and contribute to local peacebuilding.

Community sessions, home visits and awareness campaigns reached more than 2,000 people. Twenty-five drama performances made complex issues more accessible, using stories about disability discrimination, gender-based violence, forced marriage and women’s participation in decisions.

Five radio talk shows on Voice of Reconciliation 98.4 FM and Radio Jonglei 95.8 FM brought community members, officials, legal experts and disability advocates into public discussion. Women took active roles in group leadership, training, dialogues and radio programmes.

“This project has given us confidence to speak about our rights and participate in decisions that affect our lives.”
